- Story
- Ever since we put on our first merino t-shirt we’ve been dreaming of ways to
bring that incredible feeling to a button down shirt - an impossible task,
really. In the world of fabric, a woven cotton oxford cloth and a knit
merino jersey are as different as the high desert and deep ocean, two
radically different sides of the same orbit. As a result, our goals have
become far more subtle, and perhaps more sophisticated as well.
The Oco Merino Oxford is built around an oxford cloth where an organic cotton warp is combined with a superwashed superfine merino weft to create a subtly better shirt.
Cotton is, of course, the essence of an oxford cloth. When woven in the classic two up, two down weave, it creates a fabric with a serious structure that breaks in to become a beautifully soft “reach for it” kind of garment. Our goal was to build on this foundation, not replace it, so we built the Oco Merino Oxford Cloth around a classic warp of organic cotton and focused our attention on the fill, or weft.
For the fill we went to a workhorse fiber, superwashed superfine merino wool. At 18.9 microns, it wears soft enough that many brands use it for next to skin applications, but is thick enough to hold its own in something with the heft of an oxford cloth. Merino has a lower specific gravity than cotton, so it weaves into a lighter and more airy oxford cloth than a pure cotton one. And naturally, it has all the properties that makes merino nature’s finest performance fabric, from odor resistance to its incredible ability to absorb water while staying dry to the touch.
All this nets out to a simple, easy to wear garment, the sort of oxford you might reach for instinctively and want to wear every day. - Fabric
