Story

As little jacket as possible for summer use. The Mesh Freeshell was born from us using our standard Freeshells for sun protection and realizing they just had too much fabric going on. If you are already wearing a t-shirt you don't need sun protection for your torso, just for your arms and head. So we took it even lighter and swapped in mil-spec mesh for the body fabric, but left our UPF 50+ fabric in place for the arms and hood.

The whole jacket packs away into its own pouch with a removable and adjustable carry strap. It's not quite a bag in this form but it can carry your sunglasses and a sandwich. When the effects of the sun start feeling a bit harsh it quickly transforms into an incredibly light jacket that offers UPF 50+ coverage on the arms and in the hood. Just be careful to be aware which parts of the body are protected and which aren't. The mesh portion of the jacket offers very little protection from anything at all, but it does welcome in the summer breezes for an all around cooler experience.

While we may have stripped the fabric down to near nothing, we left all the good Freeshell bits in. The wrist features the parallel shock cord system for easy one hand adjustment. The two back vent zips allow the jacket to cleanly pack into itself. The wide sling strap with custom aluminum ladder lock is easy adjustable for snug and comfortable carry. It attaches via two lightweight carabiner style buckles that allow it to double as a compression strap. The three piece hood is engineered for easy visibility and adjustable with one hand via a ladder lock system.

It all nets out to very little jacket but with quite a bit of functionality. It's not for everyone though, our standard Freeshells offer far more coverage and a bit more functionality so please take care to pick which one works best for your needs.

Fabric

Ultralight Cloth is soft and flexible with an elegant drape. Durable for its weight (145gsm) and rated UPF 50+, it's meant to handle the summer with ease.

The Ultralight Cloth is a yarn-dyed doublewoven intimate blend of various nylons. The micro-nylon fibers create a soft loose inner weave that helps pull moisture from the skin, while slightly thicker nylon is tightly woven on the outside to give it a degree of water resistance. The self-cleaning NanoSphere® treatment adds in some wine, beer and iced coffee resistance. A four-way stretch means you'll move with a breezy freedom all across a beautiful summer.

We wanted to see how this fabric handles sunlight, specifically UV radiation, so we sent it out for testing. The results show that a single layer of Ultralight Cloth blocks the transmittance of over 99% of UV radiation, giving the Ultralight Cloth an Ultraviolet Protection Factor of 50+, the highest rating possible.

The body is made of mil-spec mesh.
