Additional Information
- Story
- The best bag is the one that disappears. So light you forget you are carrying it, yet balanced
and expandable enough to carry a wide range of loads. Considered to find things without looking.
Discreet enough not to call attention to you, but once opened it should shine with a bright
interior so you can see what's inside. Hardware that looks and feels as good as it performs.
Materials worthy of the weight they carry.
Most of the credit for this bag belongs to our friends at Hyperlite Mountain Gear. Not only do they build the bags for us in their factory in Maine, but the bag itself is based off their Windrider design which we carefully modified for more urban use.
The core of both bags is nonwoven Dyneema (aka Cuben) fabric that Hyperlite are experts with. Dyneema fibers are 10x stronger than steel yet floats on water. Nonwoven Dyneema is made by encapsulating Dyneema fibers in mylar, that's then bonded to a polyester outer face. The result is a waterproof fabric that's incredibly light yet still durable enough for serious use.
The difference between Hyperlite's Windrider and the Hypercity International lies in three key transformations. The most obvious is the color. As clean as Hyperlite's all white bags look, we went with a slightly heavier black version of nonwoven Dyneema simply because we love how it looks and wears over time. We did however keep the interior back panel white so that it's easier to see what's inside. The second transformation was the pare down. The original Windriders are designed for spending weeks in the backcountry, so we eliminated unnecessary (for our uses) details until we achieved the simplest fully functional design. The final transformation was the hardware. We chose to use cast aluminum at every possible juncture. Not only is it a lighter and stronger option than plastic most bags use, but it also looks great and feels fantastic to the touch. - Fabric
- Stronger than steel yet floats on water. Nonwoven dyneema is a fiber with almost limitless
applications. Nonwoven Dyneema fibers are bonded together in multi-directional panels with various
materials depending on their application. Used from making racing sails to replacing steel cords
on freight ships to aerospace technology, nonwoven Dyneema fiber is tailored to a huge variety of
uses.
We first encountered it at a fabric trade show a few years back and were entranced by its properties. Hyperlite Mountain Gear has been using nonwoven Dyneema bonded with nylon to make super light gear for hiking, mountain climbing and camping. We became one of their first customers and now are collaborating with them to create bags. It has a low specific gravity (floats on water), is highly UV resistant and 100% waterproof.
For this bag we went with a slightly heavier black version of nonwoven Dyneema simply because we love how it looks and wears over time. - Details
