- Story
- Liberation in the form of a button-up shirt. A true four-way stretch shirting fabric, woven properly with a fine cotton, nylon and elastane blend of yarns for a classic structure and hand feel. Finished with a directional DWR treatment to keep it clean.

-
Freecotton is one of those fabrics we've been hunting and pushing for since the very first days of Outlier. If we could make four-way stretch woven pants, why not do the same for shirts? But our friends in Switzerland at Schoeller Textil gave us a firm no. They specialized in pant and jacket weights and just didn't have the expertise and equipment to work with the fine cottons needed to make proper shirting fabric.
We didn't give up of course, we kept pushing mills to do it, but the shirting mills didn't have the right looms and the four-way stretch specialists didn't have the fine cotton skills. Finally though a breakthrough came in the form of Schoeller Turkey, a division of Schoeller that combines their fabric design expertise with Turkey's rich history of cotton. It took a few years but we finally were able to design and produce a fantastic four-way stretch woven fabric with a majority cotton content (68%) mixed with a soft nylon for durability and elastane for a beautiful stretch.
We finished it all of with another first, a directional DWR treatment on the outer face of the fabric. This helps keep the fabric clean and dry, making it lightly water, dirt and grit repellant. The inner, skin facing face remains untreated, allowing for a comfortable amount of natural absorbency for optimized comfort. - Details

↗ Four-way Stretch Liberation
The heart of this shirt is the Freecotton, a fabric specially designed for us by the four-way stretch innovators at Schoeller in Switzerland. A fabric designed to allow for a nearly unlimited range of motion in all directions a fabric that allows us to create a shirt that liberates us from the subtle constraints that traditional shirting places on daily life.
↗ A Cotton Framework
The main fiber of this shirt is cotton (68%), allowing us to create a sharp and crisp fabric with the look, structure and hand feel of a classic shirting. But with the addition of micro-nylon (21%) and elastane (11%) we are able to create a fabric that is both subtly stronger and dramatically more flexible. Nature and technology woven together to create a superior shirting.
↗ Properly Woven
The difference between a button-up and a t-shirt is the difference between a woven fabric and knit fabric. Most shirts sold as four-way stretch are knits, while the Freecotton is properly woven. This means it looks, feels and drapes like a button-up shirt should, not like a dressed up t-shirt. It is not a distinction everyone needs to care about of course, but if you do, the Freecotton is the fabric you need.
↗ Directional DWR Treatment
Clean on the outside, comfort on the inside. For the first time ever Schoeller was able to supply us with a directional version of their DWR treatment. This means the outside of fabric behaves like the fractal surface of a lotus leaf, making it water, dirt and grime resistant (but not proof, it has limits). However the inner skin facing surface is untreated allowing for cotton's natural absorbency to pull moisture away from the skin for superior comfort.
↗ A Yokeless Construction
The four-way stretch of the Freecotton allows us to make a shirt without a rear yoke. Not only does it satisfy our minimalist instinct for engineering elegance, but it also removes bulk and seams from the back of the shirt, eliminating contact points and lines of resistance to create a more comfortable product.
↗ Fabric Designed in Switzerland, Woven in Turkey
Four-way stretch fabrics are incredibly hard to weave and no one does it better then Schoeller. But their mill in Switzerland is not optimized to work with the fine cotton yarns great shirting demands. The Freecotton is designed in Switzerland and produced in the cotton heartlands of Turkey in direct partnership with Schoeller.
↗ Cut and Sewn in Portugal
The more we make clothes in Portugal the more we love it. The combination of high quality, detail obsessed factories and a great quality of life is perhaps unparalleled. More importantly as an EU country it means the workers are treated great and paid well. And of course the shirts are fantastic.
