- Story
- How do you take something as simple as a longsleeve t-shirt to the next
level? That's actually straightforward, we've been bringing merino
performance into t-shirts for years, but how do we go even further? With our
Cottonweight Merino Jersey we took it a step beyond, using a cotton outer
face to get heavyweight structure and a merino inner face to get the dry
thermoregulating comfort of nature’s finest performance fiber. But we didn’t
stop there. The Natural Dyed Cottonweight Longsleeves are sewn up and then
put through a natural dyeing process that allows the deep character of the
two fibers to interact, creating a depth and variance of color we absolutely
love.
Merino and cotton are dyed differently using different substances. To dye them together means combining dyestuffs and a high degree of unpredictability as to how everything interacts. Fabrics shrink and skew, labels become unreadable or peel away. But what emerges is often beautiful. It's far less precise than fabric dyed in a mill, but it has far more character as well. With natural dyeing the uncertainties multiply as the dyestuffs themselves are highly variable. For the Pressed Flower color we use natural bundles of peony flower. For the Natural Phantom we use logwood and chestnut tannin plus iron salts. These longsleeve t-shirts enter the process crisp and clean, and leave heavyweight champs, gritty and full of character, tonal depth and resonance.
The natural dye process adds extra risk, uncertainty and variation to the garments, this is not a product for the fussy or overly precise. There are risks of fading, crocking, bleeding and who knows what else. Occasionally the process damages the heat transfer labels at the neck and the care labels on the side, so proceed with caution. On the flip side the cotton face and heavyweight makes this shirt tougher than your average merino, perfect for bringing merino’s amazing natural performance into more rough and tumble situations. - Fabric
-
Soft on the skin and opaque to the eye, Cottonweight Merino is a double knit jersey with an 18.5 micron merino inner face and a cotton outer face. The merino inner face is beautifully soft with a cool, dry body climate while the crisp cotton outer face brings the structure, heft and opacity we expect from a heavyweight longsleeve t-shirt. Weighing in at 220gsm, it makes for a proper heavyweight longsleeve t-shirt fabric. - Details
