Freecotton is one of those fabrics we've been hunting and pushing for since the very first days of Outlier. If we could make four-way stretch woven pants, why not do the same for shirts? But our friends in Switzerland at Schoeller Textil gave us a firm no. They specialized in pant and jacket weights and just didn't have the expertise and equipment to work with the fine cottons needed to make proper shirting fabric.

We didn't give up of course, we kept pushing mills to do it, but the shirting mills didn't have the right looms and the four-way stretch specialists didn't have the fine cotton skills. Finally though a breakthrough came in the form of Schoeller Turkey, a division of Schoeller that combines their fabric design expertise with Turkey's rich history of cotton. It took a few years but we finally were able to design and produce a fantastic four-way stretch woven fabric with a majority cotton content (68%) mixed with a soft nylon for durability and elastane for a beautiful stretch.

We finished it all of with another first, a directional NanoSphere treatment on the outer face of the fabric. This helps keep the fabric clean and dry, making it lightly water, dirt and grit repellant. The inner, skin facing face remains untreated, allowing for a comfortable amount of natural absorbency for optimized comfort.
