Story
How do you take something as simple as a longsleeve t-shirt to the next level? We’ve been bringing merino performance into our longsleeves for years, but we occasionally miss the structure of a heavyweight cotton. Our Cottonweight Merino Jersey marries the best of cotton and merino. A cotton face gives us a beautiful heavyweight structure, and a merino backing gives us the dry thermoregulating comfort (and softness) of nature’s finest performance fiber. The GD Cottonweight Merino Longsleeves are then sewn up and put through a garment dyeing process that allows the deep character of the two fibers to interact, creating a depth and variance of color we absolutely love.

Merino and cotton are dyed differently using different substances. To dye them together means two separate dye baths and a high degree of unpredictability as to how everything interacts. Fabrics shrink and skew (mostly visible at the side seam), but what emerges is often beautiful. It's far less precise than if it were fabric dyed in a mill, but it has far more character as well. Subtle variations in the dye bath create subtle textures, and with two dye baths and two types of fiber, these interact to create tonal depth and resonance. These longsleeves enter the process crisp and clean, and leave heavyweight champs, gritty and full of character.

The garment dye process adds risk, uncertainty, and variation to the garments. This is not a product for the fussy or overly precise. There are risks of fading, crocking, bleeding, and who knows what else. On the flip side, the cotton face and heavy weight make this shirt tougher than your average merino, perfect to bring merino's amazing natural performance into more rough and tumble situations.
Fabric
Cottonweight Merino Logo
Soft on the skin and opaque to the eye, Cottonweight Merino is a double knit jersey with an 18.5 micron merino inner face and a cotton outer face. The merino inner face is beautifully soft with a cool, dry body climate while the crisp cotton outer face brings the structure, heft and opacity we expect from a heavyweight longsleeve t-shirt. Weighing in at 220gsm, it makes for a proper heavyweight longsleeve t-shirt fabric.
